Adhered to the vertical crossbar of the stretcher are two artist's labels providing his Surabaya address: Drogostraat 34 / Soerabaia. Tel D.256. Adolfs was an artist who traveled widely and his best-known subjects were the market scenes, cock-fights, and townscapes he painted from firsthand experience in Java, Bali, Japan and North Africa. This work, painted in Surabaya, Java, is a fine example of these efforts. Adolfs returned to his native Netherlands in 1940. Unfortunately the largest portion of his oeuvre was destroyed in the bombing of Nijmegen in 1944.
