This miraculous image of ‘Maria vom Blut’ from the oblate monastery in Munich is to be modeled of the Italian mountain village Re. In 1494, the fresco of the Madonna at the outer wall of the Mauritius church in Re began to bleed. According to tradition the blood was caused by a stone’s throw of a drunken man, who lost a dice game. In rage he threw a stone against the picture of Maria, which began to bleed at the hit area – the forehead.
Condition:
The canvas shows stronger craquelure, reveals light pressure marks, due to the underlying stretcher, scattered color spallings, torns, minimal losses in the relief crown as well as some holes in the area of the edges. One concave and convex dent in the central left and right area. Overpaintings are punctual shown. (ala)
