This miraculous image of ‘Maria vom Blut’ is to be modeled of the Italian mountain village Re. In 1494 the fresco of the Madonna at the outer wall of the Mauritius church in Re began to bleed. According to tradition the blood was caused by a stone’s throw of a drunken man, who lose in a dice game. In rage he threw a stone against the picture of Maria, which began to bleed at the hit area – the forehead.
Condition:
The painting and the and with partial traces of wear. The canvas shows craquelure as well as reveals light pressure marks, due to the underlying stretcher. Some small losses of color can be found, especially in the lower area of the painting. The upper central area shows one small hole and a convex dent. A larger tear (c. 2,5 cm) with loss of color can be found in the lower left area. The frame shows signs of use. (ala)
