Description
A very large and impressive Greek red-figure skyphos, Apulia, 4th Century BC, one side depicting a lady of fashion standing to right, wearing chiton and richly jeweled, her hair in a sapphos, holding a box with open lid in her outstretched left hand, two bunches of grapes in her right hand; an elegantly rendered flowering plant before. The opposite depicts a nude youth standing lt., wearing fillet, chlamys draped over arm, holding a sceptre entwined by a serpent in his right hand and a plate with fruits and flowers in his left; rosettes in the field around. The opposing side below the handles are adorned with attractive palmette and floral devices, a wave pattern borders each scene below and an ovolo band above. H: 10 5/8 in (27 cm); W: 15 5/8 in (39.6 cm). A very large and impressive piece! Ex Orange County private collection.
