Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A smooth round creamy brown slipped vessel in the style known as a "drum", and with a lighter-colored, fitted lid. Around the body of the vessel is a series of low relief, very basic female figures standing under arches. The artwork raises many interesting questions - who are the women depicted? Where are they supposed to be? Little is known of Colima architecture, but based on analogy to later Mesoamerican art, being placed under an archway may be interpreted as symbolic of death. However, the arches have small details at their bases - lines and dots - that make them resemble two-headed snakes. A fascinating mystery to ponder! Size with lid: 6.55" W x 7.2" H (16.6 cm x 18.3 cm)
