Description
Near East, Northwest Pakistan, ancient region of Gandhara, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A deeply carved, high relief grey schist panel section depicting a mature bearded Atlas, in a squatting position with both hands placed upon his knees as if he is about to rise, perhaps in an effort to carry the celestial heavens for all eternity upon his shoulders. Most pleasing, the sculptor of this carved relief panel clearly adopted the appreciation of human anatomy and the high stylistic idioms of the classical world. A breathtaking piece for its rich iconography, stupendous technique, and classical styling. Custom stand. Size: 4" W x 3.875" H (10.2 cm x 9.8 cm)
