First Edition of One of the Most fascinating and harrowing narratives of the early 19th century" (Graff). Phelps and his family were members of a party of Yankee adventurers led by Phineas Lyman to settle on the Yazoo River in the Natchez County. The results were tragic and "it is no wonder Phelps returned to New England as soon as he could make it" (Graff).
