Description
Early 20th century, having a lobed rim, the surface decorated with an ornate scene depicting temples, bridges over flowing rivers, rockwork, men fishing, hawkers, lovers, birds, and willow trees, the underside stamped "Clay / King Street / Covent Garden," on a contemporary custom black lacquer stand with bamboo-form legs; Henry Clay set up his papier-mâché business in 1772, moving to 18 King Street, Covent Garden in 1785, where he specialized in small articles such as trays, tea caddies, knife boxes and dressing cases until the business closed in 1822; some of his trays are displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and in the Queen's Collection at Frogmore. Tray: 2" H X 30" W X 22.5" D; on stand: 19" H. Light craquelure and minor paint losses to tray surface; heavier craquelure to underside.
