Item Details
Description
23rd century BC. A carved shell cylinder seal with two rows, each depicting a different scene with human and animal figures; accompanied by a signed scholarly note issued by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: Cylinder Seal of Fossil Shell, 33 x 13 mm. The surface is divided into two registers by a double line. In the upper register there is a row of three standing human-like figures facing a seated figure (no longer clearly visible), and one standing figure behind this seated figure. In the bottom register a hero succours a horned domestic animal with each arm, while these animals are being attacked by a lion each on the outside of the scene. This is an interesting Akkadian seal, c. 2300-2200 B.C., from Mesopotamia or a neighbouring area. Some parts of the surface are worn, but most of the design can be seen. 8.32 grams, 33mm (1 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; part of his family collection since the 1970s.
