Description
26th-mid 24th century BC. A large carved jasper Early Dynastic III cylinder seal from North Syria with a figure tape; two caprids with herringbone stylised necks gallop to the right, to two jump crossing caprids; here the right one has the head of a lioness and also a herringbone stylised neck-skin, but the neck-skin of the left one runs in parallel stripes; strong use of the ball drill; accompanied by a museum-quality impression. 22.48 grams, 40mm (1 1/2"). From a private collection of seals and amulets, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s.
