Description
Circa 3000 BC. A lapis lazuli cylinder seal with figure and animals; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Cylinder Seal of Lapis Lazuli, 28.5 x 12 mm. The design consists of deep cuts in a simple patter, and at one point these cuts cease and there is a row of three item: a kneeling man with one hand raised, above him a fish, and above the fish a walking quadruped t?te-b?che to the man. This is a rare North-Syrian or Anatolian type of seal, c.3000 B.C. It is worn and chipped at one end.' 5.30 grams, 27mm (1"). Property of a London gentleman; part of his family collection since the 1970s. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz.
