Spear studied at George Washington University, ASL of NYC, and Académie Julian in Paris. While in California in 1927, he painted on the Mendocino coast and was active in southern California. He held memberships in the Boston Art Club; National Academy of Design, 1920; the St. Botolf's Club; the Allied Artists of America; the Guild of Boston Artists; and the Copley Society. Spear's exhibitions and awards include a medal at the Pan-American Exposition of 1915; a prize at the National Academy of Design in 1921; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; the Corcoran Gallery of Art; and the Boston Art Club in 1908. Institutions representing Spear's work include the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; and the Ellwood House Museum in Dekalb, IL.
