Description
A Roman orange-ware unguentarium, c. 3rd - 5th Century AD, hand built, with tapered base and horizontal ridges around the shoulder and neck and with a low vertical rim. The surfaces are nicely burnished in a deep red-orange, mineral deposits throughout and what look to be carbon deposits around the rim and mouth. H: 5 3/4 in (14.6 cm). An interesting vessel that doesn't seem to have been used for holding oil. Ex Tachner collection with receipts from the Ariadne gallery (1980).
