Roman Bronze Lamp Lid in Eagle Form
Roman Bronze Lamp Lid in Eagle Form
Item Details
Description
Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A cast bronze eagle, a lid for an oil lamp, with the ring for hinging it to the lamp present and intact. This is an impressive, well-done cast, with beautiful fine details for the feathers and wings and a naturalistic pose. The Roman eagle is a symbol of the legions, and the owner of such a fine bronze lamp would have been wealthy, and maybe someone high up in the Roman military. Size: 1.3" W x 1.5" H (3.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: From Bavarian Private Collection S. K., acquired in the 1960s
