Description
Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, attributed to John Remmey, III, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a drooping flower with blossom composed of several overlapping loops. The style of the flower, including its scalloped leaf extending to the left, are characteristic of the work of John Remmey, III, of Manhattan, NY. Incised "X" on shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A large, horizontal Y-shaped crack extending from left side of jug onto far left side of jug's front. A shallow, glazed-over chip to bottom edge.
