Description
Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, Classic Period, ca. 200 to 900 CE. A large pottery whistle in the form of an owl-transformed human shaman figure. With human shape and an owl face, including huge wide eyes which modulate the sound of the whistle and a large beak; the figure was probably at one time painted, giving more clarity to the interesting robes it is wearing. The owl is a symbol of death for the Maya, described in the Popol Vuh as messengers of Xibalba, the sinister underworld, giving this figure a sinister component. Size: 5.9" W x 6.6" H (15 cm x 16.8 cm)
