Description
China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A beautiful small twin-handled pottery jar decorated with a complex black and red pigmented geometric pattern around the shoulder, neck, and handles. This piece looks like it belongs to the early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin (modern day Gansu Province in northwestern China to Henan Province in central China). This culture is sometimes called the Yangshao. What is remarkable about these designs is that they demonstrate very early use of the brush for artistic work. Size: 5.35" W x 4.2" H (13.6 cm x 10.7 cm)
