Description
**First Time At Auction**
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A fine hand-built ceramic jar with a flat base, a bulbous body with a widened midsection, a rounded shoulder which leads to an inward-curving neck, a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles. The interior of the rim boasts a painted zigzag register within a solid black ground, and the exterior displays registers of linear and geometric motifs. This vessel would have been used as an offering vessel and placed inside a tomb. Size: 4.875" W x 3.875" H (12.4 cm x 9.8 cm).
Provenance: ex-Davis collection, Houston, Texas, acquired before 2013 from various auction houses in London and New York

Condition
Both handles restored with overpainting along outer surfaces. Minor nicks to rim, handles, body, and base, fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light pitting across most exterior surfaces. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
