Waugh, Samuel Bell (American, Philadelphia Portrait Specialist 1814 - 1885), "Portrait of Stoner Herstein, age 8", 1859, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower center S. B. Waugh 1859, 43 x 35 inches, A cherubic boy sits in a carved mahogany chair accompanied by his dog. The Boy's ball sits in front of the Boy who wears a distinctive plaid scarf, Provenance: Solomon Stoner (A prominent 19th Century Pittsburgh Merchant and organizer of the first Merchant's Bank), Stoner's Daughter (the sitter's mother), Glen Osbourn, Pittsburgh Pa. The artist was born in western PA and was the son of the founder of New Wilmington, PA. After leaving New Wilmington,he first studied in Pittsburgh before leaving for further art studies abroad and in eastern PA.
Condition
in good condition with some imperfections to the surface, cleaned and restored in the last 50 years, framed in a neoclassical vine frame
