Description
Heavy sterling silver box by well-known Native American silversmith, Harold Lovato (1954 - 1996). Signed with the maker’s hallmark, a co-joined “HL” monogram stamped on the underside of the lid. Designed and crafted using the Hopi silver overlay technique, Harold Lovato is a Kewa - Santo Domingo Pueblo artist. On this box he has depicted the famous “man in the maze” design that has been used on baskets and pottery. The inset, black areas are beautifully textured with tiny hammer marks and the lid fits the box with amazing precision.

NOTES: Harold Lovato won many awards for his highly crafted Pueblo modern design work at the Santa Fe Indian Market from 1974 - 1996, winning 1st place awards in 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978 and 1980. His work is in the collection of the National Museum of the American Indian (Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC) as well as in many important private collections.
