Description
Large, finely painted American Satsuma vase decorated with an early California historic motif depicting a young Californios man and woman in their finest Spanish Colonial period clothing. Circa 1920. Arts & Crafts - Art Deco. Unsigned, unmarked. This piece was found in San Francisco. The glazing technique and design are similar to that found on the tiles produced by companies like Catalina Pottery and California Faience. The artist who made this piece may very well have worked for a California tile or pottery company.
SIZE: Height - 12” / Diameter (at shoulder) - 9.25”
WEIGHT: 4 lbs. 14 oz.
NOTES / REFERENCES: The Californios were elite families, originally from Mexico, that received large land grants during the colonial period and flourished during the 1830s to 1880s.
American Satsuma became popular when, due to World War I, supplies of porcelain blanks from Europe became unavailable to china painters in the United States and so undecorated blanks of Satsuma pottery from Japan were imported.
