Description
This exquisitely crafted neolithic or archaic jade ram head ornament with curled horns, eye openings, and open nostrils possibly comes from the Hongshan, a neolithic culture in northwest China (3500 to 2000 BC). Hongshan burial artifacts include some of the earliest known examples of jade working. Although we do not know the exact meaning of motifs, the context of similar finds suggests that these anthropomorphic creatures were part of the religious or shamanic system. The large ornament appears to have been dyed, and is 3 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 1-1/2 inches deep.
Condition
The nephrite exhibits surface alteration and luster from partial restoration. From a private collection, this pei is clean, without notable flaws, and will be sold without restoration (as is).
