Item Details
Description
[English History] Thomas Gaspey. THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND: FROM THE TEXT OF HUME AND SMOLLETT TO THE REIGN OF GEORGE THE THIRD; AND THENCE CONTINUED TO INCLUDE THE RESTORATION OF THE EMPIRE IN FRANCE, THE GREAT EXHIBITION OF THE INDUSTRY OF ALL NATIONS, AND THE DEATH OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON. London Printing and Publishing, (nd). 22 (of 23) Divisions in org red cloth. A complete set that is 23-divisions in terms of its bindings would be 8-volumes in terms of its text and plates, divided between a 4-volume Old Series plus a 4 volume New Series. This missing division is XIV, which would be New Series, Vol II, pp9-296). Title of New Series is shortened to: THE HISTORY OF ENGLAND: CONTINUED FROM THE REIGNOF GEORGE THE THIRD; AND COMPREHENDING THE RESTORATION OF THE EMPIRE IN FRANCE… 249 plates only (of 270 issued with these 22 divisions). In the list below, volume numbers pertain to the 8 volumes as conceived by the printer, rather than the divisions produced during bookbinding. Many plates are misbound.
++ Old Series, Vol I: 86 (of 93) plates (lacking Earl Warrenne, Sir Owen, William Wortham, John Russell, Cardinal Pole, John Dudley, and Thomas Gresham). In addition, Elizabeth of York is substituted for Thomas Cromwell. ++ Old Series, Vol II: 87 (of 97) plates. The missing plates are King Charles I, Lucius Carey, George Lord Goering, Lucy Percy, Earl Percy, James Stanley, Algernon Sidney, George Monk, Edward Montagu, and Anne Carre. 3 plates are misbound in other vols (Henry Spencer in Vol I, Great Fire of London in Vol I, and Anne Hyde in Vol III). Lionel Cranfield plate bound much later in Vol II than it should be. Many other plates misbound by a small distance. ++ Old Series, Vol III: 20 (of 22) plates, lacking Montagu and John Russell. ++ Old Series, Vol IV: 6 (of 7) plates, lacking Henry Fox. ++ New Series, Vol I: 14 plates. 1 plate (Siege of Gibraltar) misbound in Old Series, Vol I. ++ New Series, Vol II: As noted above, Div XIV is lacking (and would have pp9-296 and the accompanying 4 plates). The portion present in Divisions XIII, XV, and XVI have the other 15 plates. ++ New Series, Vol III: 7 plates. Pp 297-584 appear to have been omitted at some point between printing and binding: There is a gap in the text and signings between Divisions XIX-XX, but the numbering of the divisions does not account for the gap, and the portion was not present at the time the set was bound. The plate list does not call for anything in that interval. ++ New Series, Vol IV: 14 (of 15) plates, lacking the multi-portrait plate at p209, but including 2 unlisted plates (Great Exhibition and a 2nd Daniel O’Connell plate showing his trial). 13 plates on plate list.
++ 4to. Some vols have “London Printing & Publishing Co.” at spine bases. Others have “London/ New York/ Tallis & Co.” “7/6” price in gilt on spines. Spines chipped, losses near ends of spines, joints and some hinges brittle. Plates mostly very good to near fine, often with slight foxing, a few have tear and/or crease to margin. Sold with all faults. 39.5
