[Engraved Bookplates] Collection of 15 English, French and American engraved and printed bookplates from 17th - 20th century.
Notable names include the American businessman and bibliophile Harry Elkins Widener (1885-1912). He died during the sinking of the Titanic, supposedly because he raced back to his cabin to retrieve a rare 1598 edition of Bacon's Essays. This is Widener’s second bookplate, commissioned from English illustrator Walter Crane in 1908 and engraved by J.A.J. Wilcox. Henry Emerson Tuttle (1890-1946), artist specializing in bird etchings: François Robert Secousse (1660-1736) was a clergyman, doctor of theology, and priest; Charles-Antoine Tanqueray d’Hyenville (1743-1794); Thomas-Simon Gueullette (1683-1766), a French lawyer, playwright, scholar, lawyer and bibliophile; Jacques François Collombat (1701-1751) was the first regular printer of the King and the Cabinet and printer of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture; Harry C. Goebel was a New York lawyer and prominent print collector; Fred E. Reed, International Association of Real Estate Boards bookplate with ship viewed through open window of library; Rudolph Stanley-Brown (1889-1944), an American architect; John Leycester Adolphus; Legh Master (1717-1796) and John Towneley (1731-1813).
Condition varies, mostly very good, some with glue residue on reverse. Sold as is with all faults.
