East Asia, Far East, Japan, ca. 20th century CE. A very expressive painted papier mache Otafuku mask, with large eye holes for the performer. Otafuku is believed to be the goddess of happiness and mirth. This character is also known as the female half of the traditional pair featured in Japanese Kyogen theater. She is a very popular personage in Japanese art, and of the Kyogen category of masks, this character is typically featured for comic relief in classic Noh plays, but is just as popular among street performers. Size: 11.5" L x 10.25" W x 10.5" H (29.2 cm x 26 cm x 26.7 cm)
