East Asia, Japanese, Edo to Meiji Era, ca. 19th century CE. A wood mask of a Bodhisattva, probably Sho Kannon (Guanyin), the goddess of kindness, compassion, and mercy - the equivalent of Avalokitesvara. She has a soft and rounded face - jowly cheeks and plump chin- serene, with heavy lidded eyes and a small mouth set in a neutral but calm expression. The eyes are pierced for the wearer to see through and a wire is threaded through the suspension holes. Buddhist masks such as this were worn during ritual processions, to honor the deities. Size: 9.75" L x 6" W (24.8 cm x 15.2 cm)
Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

Condition
Small piece reattached to chin with visible break lines. Surface wear and nicks. Overall very good condition. Light remains pink pigment on lips. Old Chinese label on interior. Wire added for suspension.
