Description
Charles Desire Berthold Mahn (1881-9175) Oil on Canvas "Quai de Seine a Paris". A bridge over the River Seine with crane barge. Signed by the artist lower right and dated 1926. In original period gilt wood frame, measures 26 "x20"x2". Stretcher measures 21.50"x15". Weight 7 pds. PROVENANCE: From the Private Paris, France and Charleston SC Collection of J. Marterer, author of Paris 201, the Winner of the Benjamin Franklin Awards - GOLD MEDAL (Travel) and Independent Publisher Awards - SILVER MEDAL (Travel). Charles Desire Berthold Mahn was a French painter, engraver and illustrator. Born in Paris in 1881, he went to work in a factory ar age 16. He worked and secretly continued his courses at the Ecole Germain Pilon (future School of Applied Arts ). His talent was recognized during his military service in Amiens, where he met the artists Jacques d'Otemar and Albert Gleizes. They encouraged his artistic talent and Gleizes introduced him to his fellow poets, writers and painters Charles Vildrac, Georges Duhamel and Jules Romains. Together in 1906, When Duhamel founded L'Abbaye de Creteil, a utopian artistic and literary community that was named after the Creteil Abbey, as most gatherings took place in that suburb of Paris, Berthold-Mahn was a active participant. Berthold-Mahn continued a career as a painter and illustrator and illustrated over fifty French books including many books by fellow L'Abbaye de Creteil members Roger Martin du Gard and especially many works of Georges Duhamels. Berthold-Mahn died in Chamot in 1975.
