Terracotta with painting. China, Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220)
A rare large terracotta sculpture depicting a young lady. The legs are very small and floor-length garments flare like a funnel strikingly toward the ground. To the front are the angular shoes somewhat visible. Both hands are held under wide, many-pleated sleeves. The eyes are gazing ahead and appear to be - as in the entire figure – consciously held in stillness, as on the occasion of a festive ceremony while standing strictly in a row. On the back, long, bound black hair is flowing downward. The cold painting is mainly white; some accents are offered with red lines.
