Description
Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba, ca. early 20th century CE. An unusual double, janus-headed wooden sceptor, finely carved with two sets of janus heads, the upper pair with and intricately carved double-pointed headdress that is further embellished with cobalt blue pigment, the handle displaying that same finely carved pattern. A special piece with beautifully rendered janus heads, remarkable carving, rich blue pigment, and gorgeous patina. Size: 4" W x 12.25" H (10.2 cm x 31.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos collection, acquired before 1975.
