Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, Southeastern Italy, Apulia, ca 340 to 325 BCE. Beautiful pottery plate standing upon a short foot, with a shallow form, the tondo decorated in Xenon technique with a matte red shell-like motif in the center surrounded by matt red laurel leaves. The black glaze has developed a lovely deep metallic sheen with nice iridescence on the underside. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219, 1) that was inscribed with the name XENON. As we see in this example, Xenon ware is distinguished by lovely matt red painted decoration over a black glaze. Size: 6.25" W x 1.5" H (15.9 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
