Description
Classical World, Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 300 BCE. This is a delicate, detailed, small vessel known as a prouchous, a small version of the oinochoe. It has a bulbous body and tall, bill-shaped spout. Many of these vessels, like this one, were ornamented with bands of geometric decoration called listati. The prochous was made to store precious liquids like oil or wine. A particularly fine detail of this piece is its painted line between foot and body; there are also twin faces on either side of the spout. This is an example of Gnathian ware, distinguished by its colorful decoration applied directly to a deep black glaze on the surface of the vase. Size: 3.15" W x 7.75" H (8 cm x 19.7 cm)
