Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. An endearing sculptural representation of a mother and child, decorated in red and black on a beige ground. The standing female holds her infant in her right arm and places her left hand to her womb, which protrudes slightly, perhaps indicating that pregnancy. She dons a large nose ring, ear ornaments, and a painted beaded necklace. Note the fabulous linear patterns across the surfaces, created via the negative resist technique mastered by the Nayarit. A wonderful example! Size: 3.25" W x 5.5" H (8.3 cm x 14 cm)
