Description
India, 17th century CE. This is a small part of a wooden cart, carved with the image of a goddess riding a donkey in high relief. The goddess holds up her hands in a symbolic gesture, wearing while her more naturalistic donkey is seen in profile. The goddess is most likely Shitala Devi, also called Sitala, who is an incarnation of the Supreme Goddess Durga, who cures poxes, sores, and other diseases. Her name means "one who cools." Size: 3.45" L x 6.6" W x 14.2" H (8.8 cm x 16.8 cm x 36.1 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Private San Diego, CA collection acquired in the 1980's.
