Description
Mid-19th century AD. A glazed earthenware bread-plate or charger with maroon centre, reserved design of scrolled tendrils, radiating ears of wheat, blue rosette and ring; outer blue border with rosettes and 'waste not want not' legend in 'Gothic' script. 1.5 kg, 34cm (13 1/4") Ex Dr Creswell collection; acquired from FCR Gallery, London W8, in 2008; with a copy of the original invoice dated 18 November 2008, and communication from the Victoria & Albert Museum. This plate is one the best known designs for domestic wares by Augustus Pugin (1812-1852), now considered an icon of Gothic Revival design. It is one of a group of encaustic ceramics produced by Herbert Minton. Pugin's chosen technique of inlaying clay is suited to such a design using just three colours, replicating the appearance of medieval floor tiles. The proceeds of this lot will go to the Himalayan Trust.
