A Minton Art Pottery charger, dated 1871
Decorated in various coloured clays tooled in shallow relief underglaze, with Venus standing naked on an egg and beating a drum while four Cupids emerge from further newly hatched eggs, one Cupid holding a heart, surrounded by a slender jewelled chain and doves in flight, 34.5cm diam, impressed marks with date cipher
Footnotes:
The subject and treatment of coloured clay is reminiscent of the work of the brothers Frederick Rhead and George W Rhead. Both had arrived at Minton around 1870 and were pupils of W S Coleman and M L Solon.
