Description
Back at auction due to fraudulent bidder from 6/2/2016 sale…
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A beautifully hand built Quimbaya terracotta male slab figure, the head and body comprised of square and rectangular slabs of clay with thick coils attached for arms and legs. Boasting an expressive pose, he sits with his left hand resting upon his left knee while his right arm is raised with an open hand and extended fingers as if making an oration or throwing something upward. His legs are bent and separated revealing a small phallus and both feet are firmly planted on the ground. The neck is indicated via a deep groove as is customary of such Quimbaya figures. Grooves around the knees, upper arms, and forehead indicate that ornamental bands were once present. There is some indication of incised marks for the eyes and mouth; however the large nose is naturalistically modeled with a pierced septum for that marvelous and large ancient gold nose ring. Other piercings on head and chest most likely for additional ornamentation. Handsome wood block mount. A superb example. Size: 6.75" W x 8.25" H (17.1 cm x 21 cm); 9.75" H (21 cm)
Provenance: Ex-private FL collection acquired at Art for Eternity Gallery, NYC
