Description
Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Middle Cauca Complex, Quimbaya culture, ca. 800 to 1300 CE. A charming hand-built pottery figure of a flat, highly abstract form seated with bent legs atop a wide base. The rectangular head boasts a minimalist visage decorated with a pair of lengthy slit-form eyes, an identically formed mouth opening, a bulbous nose, and several perforated holes that line an inconspicuous brow line. Grooves around its feet and upper arms indicate that bands were once present - the Quimbaya were known for lavish displays of wealth, especially with their gold. A perforated septum holds an 85% gold (equivalent to 20K+) nose ring which dangles freely. Slab figures like this example were placed as burial offerings, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 6.75" L x 3.25" W x 7.5" H (17.1 cm x 8.3 cm x 19 cm); quality of gold: 85% (equivalent to 20K+)
