Description
Pre-Columbian, South Highlands, Peru, Pucara culture, ca. 250 BCE to 100 CE. Very large ceremonial stone pestle carved with representation of deity known as Hatan Naqak, the great decapitator with spiraled eyes, large fangs, and a zoomorphic, lizard-like helmet. Carved in high relief with red and white pigment remaining. Pucara is known for its horseshoe shaped temple, a sanctuary of stone masonry. Pucara stone sculptures show similarities to the Tiwanaku. In fact, scholars believe that the Pucara culture was a forerunner of Classic Tiwanaku styles, since early levels of Tiwanaku archaeological sites show Pucara type pottery. A rare and spectacular piece! 13 3/4" (35 cm) long.
