Description
Roman Britain, ca. 1st to early 5th centuries CE. This is a gorgeous bronze fibula (brooch) in the shape of an arm and hand, curved at the elbow, with the hand itself carefully detailed, and a round banded design acting as "sleeves" below and above the elbow. Romano-British artwork combines elements of the Celtic peoples and the Roman colonists into a unique, instantly recognizable, and often quirky artistic style. An item like this would have been used for holding on a cloak - a necessary garment in the wet climate of Roman Britain. Size: 3.9" W x 1.6" H (9.9 cm x 4.1 cm)
