Friedrich Feigl (1884-1965)
Born in Prague in 1884, the artist began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1904, where he was taught by Vlaho Bukovac, Bohumír Roubalík and Franz Thiele. After stops at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and the Académie Julian, Feigl undertook a long study trip across Europe from 1906 onwards. In Berlin, he met Max Liebermann, whose art influenced him all his life and who established contact with the Neue Secession. After a trip to Italy in 1907, Feigl became a founding member of the Czech-German expressionist group ‘Osma’, which rebelled against the Prague Academy. In 1910, Feigl moved to Hamburg and later to Berlin, where he organized a meeting of Dresden’s Brücke with Prague’s Skupina. Eventually, he returned to Prague in 1932 and from there traveled to the Middle East, especially to Egypt. In 1939, Feigl was able to escape to England and he settled in London. Feigl's works can be found at the National Gallery in Prague, the Ostdeutsche Galerie in Regensburg, the Ben Uri Collection in London, and the Moravská Gallery in Brno, among others. (cko)
