Description
ENGLISH LUSTRE CERAMIC WATCH HOLDER, pearlware, molded with columns and a panel with a floral decoration on the front at the top; polychrome and copper lustre decoration with cup-shaped holder for watch on back panel and circular copper lustre decorated surround; base is also decorated and glazed. Unmarked. Possibly Newcastle. Circa 1815. 8 1/16" H.
Undamaged except for one minor flake to top molded section, minor to no wear, minute losses to lustre in several areas on front molding.
Literature: Similarly molded holder in Gibson - 19th Century Lustreware, p. 135, plate 132.
Provenance: From a Boston area collection.
Catalogue Note: Potteries in Newcastle have been noted as using similar moldings at the top and bottom, and for using a multi-colored "marbled" decoration in lustre. Another example from the John J. Snyder collection is similarly molded and attributed to Thomas Fell of Newcastle.
