AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) GENRE PAINTING, oil on canvas, possibly a Western scene, full-length depiction of a barefoot young man wearing wide-brimmed hat and holding a fishing pole along with string of bait fish while standing on a lake shore in a mountainous setting, no signature located, on likely original stretchers with canvas stamp verso for "Edw. Dechaux / New York". Housed in a period ripple-molded giltwood frame. Second quarter 19th century. 20 1/2" x 16 1/2" sight, 24 1/2" x 20 1/2" OA.
Moderate craquelure throughout. A few small areas of flaking/surface losses to paint. Old small repair with associated inpainting at lower right edge. Scattered minor inpainting throughout. Wear to surface of frame.
