Item Details
Description
Greek, Lydian, ca. 6th century BCE. A brown glazed pottery vessel of remarkably thin walls, of an unusual shape that seems to defy gravity, with a flat rim, the body decorated with broad brown-glazed bands between orange-brown lines above and below, a high, narrow foot with reserved outer edge. A curiously shaped jar, quite a rare form used for containing perfume in antiquity. It is believed that these jars, many of which were found at Sardis, were a form particular to Lydia. This said, they have also been discovered at various Mediterranean sites implying that they along with their contents were exported. Size: 3" W at widest x 4.25" H (7.6 cm x 10.8 cm).
