Item Details
Description
Carte des Routes des Postes de l'Empire Francais du Royaume de l'Italie et de la Confederation du Rhin. Tardieu, gravieur des postes Imperiales, 1812. Approximately 50 x 56 1/4 inches, color outlined, silk backed in sections and folded. Enclosed in contemporary crimson straight-edge morocco richly gilt solander case, titled with elaborate Napoleonic arms and decorations to cover. Tears and repairs to opened areas of old silk backing, map itself just lightly soiled, a few panels toned, a candidate for re-backing, case rebacked with some tears to openings, rubbed and soiled. Provenance: Martin-Michel-Charles Gaudin, Duc de Gaete, Napoleon's Minister of Finance and the founder of the Banque du France with his bookplate to map. An old auction or bookseller's listing laid in attributing this map to Napoleon, with the provenance of the Duc de Gaete as above this seems highly likely though we can not conclusively attribute this as Napoleon's personal copy.
