Octavo (5.5"x 9.25") 1838. 2 volumes in contemporary full speckled leather. Spine with 7 double-ruled gilt lines and gilt title on black title block in second compartment. A very attractive set of medical books published in Philadelphia with prior owners name in neat manuscript in three lines to front flyleaf. Dr Gibson taught at Jefferson Medical College (Founded 1824). In 1835, Francis S. Beattie, 1st Chair of the Department, assisted Professor William Gibson with the first, successful for both mother and child, Caesarean section, in Philadelphia. These books contain 30 plates, 5 of which are hand colored.
