Octavo (5.5"x 8.5") 1804. Contemporary full leather with 5 double-ruled gilt lines on spine with gilt title on rule-framed red leather title block in second compartment, gilt numeral 4 in third. Both joints tender with small loss along both, covers firmly attached. The plate volume (IV) consisting of 115 copperplate engravings of medical devices with complete explanations of each plate and the index for the 3 volumes that would precede this one. One of the many interesting plates show bellow type instruments that the explanation says was to be filled with burning tobacco "for injecting tobacco smoke into the rectum". When describing the length of the hose for insertion ("two feet and a half"), "it serves more effectually to cool the smoke before it reaches the bowels".
