Item Details
Description
Description: Lot of 3 circa 1876 cdv photographs mounted on board with original invoice on photographer's letterhead for an order of 1000 of these images. This is a unique archive featuring 1 invoice and 3 variant Fritchie related photographs; (1) Mrs. Barbara Fritchie of Frederick, Maryland, (2) her home, and (3) the U.S. American Flag she displayed. Attached invoice on photographer's letterhead reads "J. Davis Byerly, Photographer, No. 29 Market St., Frederick, Md. June 13, 1876. Mr. C.E. Butler, Bot [sic] of J.D. Byerly, 1000 Picts of Barbara Fritchie, her Home and Flag. $50.00. All pictures being from the originals." Possibly these were ordered for selling at a Centennial celebration? A brief Internet research on Barbara Fritchie revealed that she was a friend of Francis Scott Key and participated with him in a memorial service at Frederick, Maryland when George Washington died. It is said that at age 95, she waved the Union Flag in the street in front of her house to block or antagonize Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops as they passed through the town of Frederick, MD. She died one year later at the age of 96. This incident appears to be legend but it did inspire the poem by John Greenleaf Whittier in 1864 entitled "Barbara Frietchie". In reality, Barbara was sick in bed and her request to remove the flag was not heeded resulting in the Confederate troops shooting it. All 4 pieces are glued to period cardstock with no attempt made to remove them.
