Pakistan and Afghanistan, Gandharan Empire, ca. 1st century CE. This fragment that shows a face with flowing, Greek-style hair. The face is sensitive and lifelike, with a peaceful gaze. The Gandharan tradition blends Greek and Central Asian artistic themes, and the influence of the Greeks -- brought to Gandhara by Alexander the Great -- is obvious in this sculpture.
