Description
Roman Empire, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. This is a really fine example of a bronze amulet in the shape of a standing eagle; the level of detail is amazing, with incised lines creating feathers on the wings and legs, a clear face with beak, and feet. He sits perched, with a loop for suspension on his back. The eagle was a powerful symbol in ancient Rome, associated with Jupiter and a strong motif for the legionnaries and the military. Size: 0.75" W x 1.3" H (1.9 cm x 3.3 cm)
