Description
A exceptional Korean Koryo Style Signed Celadon Vase. Stands 6 3/4 tall, of bulbous form with narrow neck and flared rim decorated with chrysanthemums and flying cranes. The bottom with underglaze artist signature. The glaze shows typical crackle. Korean celadon is renowned, especially for its pale, jade-colored glaze, which exhibits the potters advanced understanding of color composition at that time. Although Koryos early celadon was influenced by the Chinese, Korean potters developed the borrowed art to a new and unique level. The Koreans added graceful designs onto the surface of the ceramics by using the remarkable inlaying technique, an entirely Korean invention. It is said that even the Chinese considered Korean celadon the best under heaven and more valuable than gold. Measures 6 3/4 Tall. Wt.1 pds 11 oz. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate.
